However, alt-root systems face significant technical and adoption challenges. The core assumption behind the ICANN-root is the global uniqueness of domain names, enforced by a single root to prevent namespace collisions. Alt-roots, by design, fracture this assumption, which means that two different systems could assign the same TLD to different entities — potentially leading to confusion, security issues, or broken user experiences. As browser support and integration tools evolve, it is possible that some alt-roots may achieve broader visibility without entirely displacing the ICANN-root — suggesting a future where multiple naming systems coexist, with routing and resolution managed dynamically based on user preference or application context.
