Handshake Domains Decentralized Yet Unloved

In the landscape of digital innovation, decentralization has become a rallying cry for those disillusioned with centralized control over infrastructure, finance, and communication. Cryptocurrency, decentralized finance (DeFi), and Web3 applications have all thrived on this ethos, offering alternatives to systems dominated by a few powerful players. Within this movement, Handshake domains were introduced as a bold and ideologically aligned attempt to decentralize the very naming system of the internet. Built on blockchain principles and aimed at replacing the traditional root DNS system managed by ICANN and corporate registrars, Handshake promised a new frontier of internet sovereignty. Yet despite its technical ingenuity and philosophical appeal, the project has largely remained an underappreciated curiosity—decentralized, yes, but unloved and underused in practice.
Launched in 2020, Handshake was designed to serve as a decentralized naming protocol compatible with the existing domain name system, but fundamentally different in how top-level domains (TLDs) were issued and governed. Instead of relying on central authorities to approve and manage domain extensions like .com or .org, Handshake used a blockchain to allow users to bid for and register their own TLDs via a Vickrey auction system. Ownership of a TLD on Handshake was recorded on a public ledger, immutable and censorship-resistant. This was not just about owning domain names—it was about owning namespaces themselves. If you won “.blog” on Handshake, you could issue as many subdomains under that TLD as you wanted, without needing permission from a registrar or regulatory body.
The initial excitement was strong among the crypto-savvy and decentralization-focused technologists. Handshake was integrated with Namebase, a marketplace and registrar specifically built for trading and managing Handshake domains. Early adopters flocked to the platform, registering not second-level domains like “example.com” but actual TLDs like “.ninja,” “.dao,” or “.satoshi.” The novelty of owning a top-level domain resonated with many who had watched from the sidelines as ICANN’s new gTLD program sold off extensions for hundreds of thousands of dollars to corporations. Now, with a few hundred HNS tokens and some luck in the bidding process, individuals could become their own registry.
However, as the initial wave of speculative registrations faded, the challenges of adoption began to mount. The most immediate and persistent issue was compatibility. Handshake domains are not resolvable by default in traditional web browsers. Unlike ICANN-sanctioned TLDs, Handshake’s domains require special DNS resolvers, browser extensions, or configuration of custom settings to be accessed. While some crypto browsers like Brave or extensions like HNSD and NextDNS offered support, mainstream browsers—where the vast majority of internet traffic occurs—offered no native compatibility. This created a fundamental barrier: domains that most people couldn’t visit without jumping through technical hoops.
This technical hurdle was compounded by a lack of compelling content. While some Handshake TLD owners experimented with projects, communities, and personal branding, most domains sat idle or were listed for resale. Much of the marketplace activity revolved around flipping names rather than developing them. Some speculators hoarded hundreds of TLDs in hopes of future value, but the absence of real-world usage limited any meaningful appreciation. Unlike the .com or .io booms, which were fueled by visible adoption and startup culture integration, Handshake remained insular, with little crossover into the mainstream digital economy.
There was also confusion and overlap between Handshake’s namespace and existing ICANN-approved domains. Users who registered TLDs like “.app” or “.dev” on Handshake quickly realized that they were not interoperable with Google’s or ICANN’s versions of those same extensions. From a legal and functional standpoint, Handshake’s decentralized claim to those names held no weight outside of its own ecosystem. This created branding uncertainty and undermined confidence in the long-term utility of many Handshake domains, especially for businesses concerned with SEO, credibility, and accessibility.
Security, ironically, also became a topic of debate. While Handshake was marketed as censorship-resistant and secure due to its blockchain architecture, the lack of oversight raised concerns. Phishing domains, unvetted content, and impersonation risks were not subject to the same regulations as traditional DNS registrars. There were no abuse reporting mechanisms, no WHOIS services, and no administrative recourse for conflicts or fraud. For some decentralization purists, this was a feature, not a bug—but for mainstream adoption, it was a non-starter.
Perhaps the most telling sign of Handshake’s struggle was its position within the broader crypto zeitgeist. At a time when NFTs, DeFi platforms, and token-based communities were drawing massive attention, Handshake remained on the periphery. Its native token, HNS, saw spikes in trading activity during general crypto bull runs, but never sustained long-term momentum. The idea of decentralizing internet naming was radical and ideologically pure, but it lacked the user-facing utility and visual appeal that made NFTs or meme coins so virally attractive. As a result, Handshake never became a cultural phenomenon—it stayed a technical experiment.
By 2023, most mainstream users had never heard of Handshake. Its domains were not part of brand launches, startup announcements, or advertising campaigns. Even within the crypto space, it had been overshadowed by Ethereum Name Service (ENS), which offered simpler human-readable wallet addresses like yourname.eth that integrated directly with the Ethereum blockchain. ENS domains, while also limited in browser visibility, benefited from their tight coupling with the DeFi ecosystem, giving them functional purpose beyond mere web access.
Handshake remains active. Its community continues to build tools, advocate for decentralized DNS, and promote the philosophical importance of owning internet infrastructure. But its story illustrates a key tension in the world of decentralization: being ideologically right isn’t enough. Adoption requires usability, clarity, and integration with the systems people already use. For all its technical sophistication and philosophical appeal, Handshake domains never cleared the hurdle of relevance. They exist, unalterable and independently governed, yet largely unloved by the wider internet.
The Handshake project remains a poignant example of both the promise and limits of decentralized alternatives. It demonstrates that while the architecture of the internet can be reimagined, doing so in a way that attracts users, developers, and content creators requires more than just breaking from central authority—it requires a clear bridge from the ideals of the future to the habits of the present.
