Registrars must comply with published transfer policies, and the entire process is executed within a well-defined timeframe, typically five to seven days. The EPP code system not only facilitates secure transfers, but also reinforces domain ownership rights, offering transparency and consistency across providers. Domain transfers can be executed by individuals, companies, or legal representatives, and the existence of an international standard ensures interoperability and recourse in case of disputes.
By contrast, the process of transferring or migrating a social media handle is informal at best and often impossible in practice. Social platforms do not officially support the transfer of account usernames from one party to another, particularly in a commercial or transactional context. When a migration is attempted—such as changing a business identity or handing control of an account to a new owner—it typically involves changing the email address and password associated with the account and manually updating profile information. From a legal and operational standpoint, this absence of formal transfer protocols poses significant risks. Businesses acquiring a brand or merging operations may be able to transfer a domain name with verifiable legal documentation and registrar-level controls, but may find it nearly impossible to secure the associated social media handle. Platforms do not offer contract-backed transfer rights, and any agreement between two parties regarding a handle is external to the platform and unsupported if challenged. In high-value or time-sensitive cases, this can result in costly delays, reputational damage, or the inability to unify branding across channels.
The lack of transferability also affects asset valuation. Domain names are widely recognized as transferable property, with marketplaces, escrow services, and valuation tools supporting the domain aftermarket. Social media handles, by contrast, cannot be reliably bought, sold, or appraised because there is no native or secure way to change hands. Even when private transactions occur, they carry the risk of platform violations, suspension, or reversal. Ultimately, the EPP code system represents a level of maturity in internet infrastructure that social media platforms have not achieved. Handle migration, on the other hand, remains a convoluted and unreliable endeavor, with no guarantees, no structure, and no true ownership.
